| Nothing quite beats the taste of eating new potatoes freshly dug from your own garden. Even if you have a small plot or no garden at all they can be planted in Potato sacks or planters, which take up a small amount of space, yet produce a bumper crop.. A GUIDE TO SEED POTATOES. All seed potatoes benefit from the chitting process. Chitted potatoes are those that have been placed in shallow trays, empty egg cartons or seed trays and given plenty of light whilst in a frost free environment. Strong shoots (chits) should develop and will help to give faster growth and healthier crops.. PLANTING. Plant the chitted potatoes in shallow ridges with 9-12 inches between each tuber. Rows should be 24 inches apart.. FERTILISER. Potatoes grow best in rich soil containing plenty of well rotted manure. Do not lime the soil as this will encourage scab. High potash fertiliser will be beneficial.. CULTIVATION. Protect young emerging shoots from frost by ‘earthing up’. Cover the young shoots by putting soil over them. Earth up regularly as the plants grow.. HARVESTING. Harvesting will depend on variety but a general guide is:- – First earlies 10-12 weeks from planting – Second earlies 13-15 weeks from planting – Main crop 15-20 weeks from planting.
